Watch for These Problems with the Windows

Look out for these common signs that your windows have been affected by the cold.

  • Ice Formation – When the outside temps fall, moisture can get trapped inside on the windowpanes. As the air gets colder and mixes with the warm inside air, the moisture can turn to ice. This can lead to damaged panes or dangerous mold or mildew growth.
  • Excess Humidity and Condensation – excessive moisture in the house, mixed with cold outside air, can lead to interior condensation. Condensation between windowpanes is usually an indicator that replacement windows are needed.
  • Air Leaks – when the temperature inside the house always seems chilly, and you are continually turning up the heat just to keep it comfortable, there are probably air leaks around the windows. Cold weather that damages the windows can result in broken seals or warped panes which allow the cold air to get inside.

Types of Windows We Install

Double Hung

This is probably the most well-known style of windows. Double hung windows feature two large frames of glass that slide up and down in a track. It is a common style for both traditional and modern homes and they have several benefits. They are easy to maintain, they are safe and easy to operate (as they do not project outward at all), and they provide excellent ventilation options with the ability to open one or both sashes.

Casement (Crank Out)

Casement windows are also a common choice. These windows have hinges mounted at the top and bottom of one side, and they crank open (pivoting like a door). They are very energy efficient as they seal tightly, and they offer great views since it is only one single sash.

Picture window

Picture windows are fixed and cannot be opened and closed. The main purpose of a picture window is to provide access to a great view. Although they cannot be opened, they do allow in lots of natural light which can generate extra heat during the winter months, and they can add incredible style to the right room. These are also the most energy-efficient windows, since they are sealed around the edges, which helps eliminate air from getting through.

Installation is Just as Important

Once you have selected the right type of windows for your home, it is important to have quality installation to take full advantage of the new windows and avoid problems down the road. The highly qualified technicians at Fiji Construction are experienced and efficient and will make sure your new windows are installed to the highest standards.

Avoid Higher Energy Bills

When the windows are old or have been damaged, the air leaks can cause significantly higher energy bills in both winter AND summer. The cold air getting in during the winter means higher heating costs, and hot summer air getting in will keep the air conditioning constantly running. Now is the perfect time to have the windows inspected to see if there are any problems that have resulted from our recent winter weather!

When is It Time for New Windows?

Keeping up on home maintenance and repairs is an important responsibility of a homeowner.  Fixing things when they break is part of the job, but it is not always clear when there is a problem. You might think a window is fine if it is not cracked, but that’s not always the case. New windows might be called for if you notice any of the following signs:

You Feel a Draft

Unless you have it propped open, you should not feel any air coming in around the window. If a window is not sealing properly, or if the weatherstripping or panes need to be replaced, you might notice air leaks.

Condensation

Not all condensation is bad, but if you see condensation (or even ice in winter) in between two panes of glass, it probably means that the seals have failed. In this case, new windows would be needed before they get too leaky.

Warped or Rotted Wood

Decaying frames are a clear sign that windows should be replaced. Once a wooden frame becomes rotted, it can allow excess moisture to get in, which leads to more rot and sometimes even mold growth around the window or behind the wall.

The Windows Stick

Opening your windows should not be difficult. They should open and close smoothly, with little effort. Once they start to stick, or if they need to be propped open to keep from closing, you know it’s time for new windows.

Why Faulty Windows Should be Replaced

Knowing WHY you should get new windows is just as important as knowing how to spot signs of trouble. As windows age, eventually the seal of the window will fail and once you have one window that has a failed seal, others are sure to follow. Energy saving costs are very substantial and most areas offer tax credits as well. Windows should be sealed tightly – if unwanted air is getting in or out it makes it harder to keep the house warm in winter and cool in summer. Heating or air conditioning must work overtime to compensate for the leaky windows and that can really add up in increased monthly energy bills. Another concern of faulty windows is safety. If windows do not close and lock properly, or if they don’t fit correctly into their frames, it can leave them vulnerable for children to accidentally open or for unwanted visitors to get in through.

Not only is it necessary to replace the windows when needed, but it is also important to make sure your new windows are installed properly! A reputable company like Fiji Construction Inc. will not only provide high-quality windows, but we measure and install properly so there are no gaps, no sticking and no uneven caulking. Window Repair after a Storm

Windows can also suffer storm damage. Falling hail can travel at incredibly high speeds and can easily shatter windows. The same is true for flying debris like tree limbs or outdoor furniture, or even entire trees that get hit by lightning and fall. This is why it’s so important to stay away from windows during a storm, in order to avoid potential injury from breaking glass.

Even though major storm damage can be left behind after severe weather passes, a homeowner might not even realize it is there. Or maybe you DO see the damage but don’t know what to do next?
